WHAT TO EXPECT

Playa del Carmen, is a beach town in the Riviera Maya, located in the northeast coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo. It is nestled between Cancun to the north and Tulum to the South. Playa was originally a small fishing town called Xaman Ha in the Mayan language. Playa has undergone rapid development with many luxury buildings and hotels. Downtown Playa centers on Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, which is a long pedestrian walkway located just one block inland from the beach that is lined with hundreds of shops, restaurants, & bars. There are many boutique hotels on the beach and just off Fifth Avenue that are walking distance from one another. Below, you will find some of our suggestions for hotel options when staying in downtown Playa.  There are other areas in Playa del Carmen that require car or taxi from downtown; Playacar, a residential and tourist development south of dowtown that houses many all-inclusive hotels & golf courses. There are also large luxury resorts & all-inclusive hotels north of downtown Playa. (Map below)
